Capoverso is a recent addition to the wine producing tradition in Montepulciano. The owner, Adriana Avignonesi comes from a long lineage of wine producers in the Vino Nobile region. After academic studies and taking a degree in sculpture, Adriana dedicated herself to cultivating the land that had been passed down to her. Her experience in wine growing and producing has been complemented by her experience in graphics and communications.
The first mention of the Avignonesi family of Montepulciano dates back to the first half of the 16th century. The family’s roots and history are closely intertwined with the history of the city and its famous wines. The Avignonesi’s membership in the landowning nobility intimately tied it to the town’s historic development, as it contributed to it by holding many public positions.
The family’s historic production of famous wines was renewed towards the end of the 19th century, when the Francesco Avignonesi name appeared among those awarded at the “Esposizione Enologica delle provincie di Siena e Grosseto” (Siena 1870) with an Honourable Mention for an 1869 noble red wine. Around 1940, the Avignonesi brothers, Geo and Luigi, combined their experience with those of the Raddi, another family with Poliziano roots, and began selling a “Colli Senesi” Chianti “vino fine da pasto”. The tradition that tied the family name to wine growing and enology has continued to the present day.
The vineyards are near the surrounding area of Montepulciano. The slopes on which the vines are grown are west and south-west facing, overlooking the towns. Not only do the vineyards benefit from optimum exposure but also a good day/night temperature range, helped by the natural winds of the area and by the geomorphologic conformation of the ground. The main part of the superficial layers of the terrain originates tuffaceous with small elements of clay in the top layers, underneath the layers of clay, leave even in the hottest years, a certain amount of humidity which is essential for a perfect maturity of the grapes.
